Koh Lanta Itineraries

Most people get Koh Lanta wrong. They book 2 nights, barely leave their resort, and wonder what the fuss was about. Or they book 10 days and run out of things to do by day 6. Here are four itineraries that actually work — tested, costed, and honest about what's worth your time.

The Quick Answer

3 days is the minimum to see the highlights. 5 days is the sweet spot — enough for beaches, diving, and Old Town without rushing. 7 days adds island hopping or a PADI course. 10 days if you're combining Koh Lanta with Phi Phi or Koh Lipe. Budget ฿1,500–4,000/day depending on your style.

How Many Days Do You Actually Need?

Koh Lanta isn't Koh Phi Phi — you're not here for all-night parties. And it's not Koh Samui — there's no luxury mall or international hospital. Koh Lanta is slower, quieter, and rewards people who take their time.

DurationBest ForDaily BudgetTotal Estimate

5 days SWEET SPOTFull experience — diving, beaches, island trip, culture฿2,000–4,000฿10,000–20,000
7 daysDeep dive — PADI course, multiple day trips, slow pace฿1,800–3,500฿12,600–24,500
10 daysAndaman exploration — Koh Lanta + Phi Phi or Koh Lipe฿2,000–4,000฿20,000–40,000
Honest Advice

If you have fewer than 3 days, Koh Lanta probably isn't worth the journey time. The ferry from Krabi takes 90 minutes, and you need half a day either side for transport. With only 2 nights you'll spend more time travelling than being here. Consider Ao Nang or Railay instead — closer to Krabi Airport, still beautiful.

The 3-Day Quickfire

The "I'm passing through the Andaman Coast and want to see what the fuss is about" itinerary. Tight but it works if you're decisive.

Day 1

Arrive, Settle, Sunset

Morning/Afternoon: Ferry from Krabi (10:30 departure, arrive Saladan ~12:00). Check into accommodation — Klong Dao or Long Beach area for the best short-trip base. Grab lunch at a beachfront restaurant.

Afternoon: Rent a scooter (฿250–350/day). Head to Long Beach (Phra Ae) — 3km of sand, warm water, easy swimming. Don't overthink it. Get in the water.

Evening: Sunset on Long Beach. Dinner at a beachfront place (฿150–400 per dish). Walk the strip. Early night — you'll need energy tomorrow.

Estimated: ฿1,500–2,500 (excl. accommodation)

Day 2

Koh Rok Snorkelling Day Trip

Full day: Book a Koh Rok day trip (฿1,200–1,500 including lunch, snorkel gear, national park fee). Depart Saladan 8:30am, return ~4:30pm. This is the single best day trip from Koh Lanta — world-class coral, crystal visibility, deserted beaches. Beach snorkelling on Koh Lanta itself is mediocre, so this trip is non-negotiable if you like being in the water.

Evening: Old Town Koh Lanta for dinner. The Friday/Saturday night market (if your timing works) is excellent — local Thai food, not tourist prices. Otherwise, the permanent restaurants along the waterfront serve fresh seafood at ฿200–500 for a full meal.

Estimated: ฿2,000–3,000

Compare Koh Lanta day trips. Koh Rok, Four Islands, sunset cruises. Book ahead in peak season (Dec–Feb) — these sell out.

Day 3

Kantiang Bay + National Park + Depart

Morning: Ride south to Kantiang Bay — dramatic limestone cliffs, calm water, most photogenic beach on the island. Swim, relax. Continue south to Mu Ko Lanta National Park (฿200 entry) for the lighthouse viewpoint and jungle trails.

Afternoon: Back to Saladan for your onward ferry. If catching a late ferry (2:30pm), you have time. If morning boat, swap Day 2 and Day 3.

Estimated: ฿1,000–2,000

Transport Warning

Ferry schedules are fixed and they don't wait. Build in 30 minutes buffer getting to Saladan pier. Traffic backs up around the car ferry crossing, especially 11am–1pm. Catching the 1:30pm ferry to Krabi? Leave Kantiang by 11:30am latest.

The 5-Day Sweet Spot

This is what we recommend to most first-timers. Five days lets you do everything worthwhile without rushing, and you get a couple of genuinely relaxed days built in.

Day 1

Arrive & Decompress

Afternoon: Arrive via ferry, check in. Rent a scooter. Nearest beach — Klong Dao or Long Beach if you're staying north. Swim. You've been travelling. Don't try to tick things off yet.

Evening: Dinner in Saladan town — cheaper and more local than beachfront. Whole grilled fish ฿200–350, pad thai ฿80–120.

Estimated: ฿1,200–2,000

Day 2

Koh Rok Day Trip

Non-negotiable. Koh Rok is the single best thing you'll do from Koh Lanta. Book it for Day 2 when you're fresh and the weather forecast is clearest. Full day on the water — world-class coral, gin-clear visibility, empty beaches.

Evening: Sunset drinks on Long Beach. You'll have earned it.

Estimated: ฿2,000–3,000

Day 3

Diving or Beach Hopping

Option A — Diving: 2-dive trip to Koh Haa (฿3,500–4,000). Open Water and above. The Cathedral — a submerged cave system at 15–20m with light streaming through cracks — alone is worth the trip. Small groups, professional shops in Saladan. Depart 7:30am, back by 3pm.

Option B — Beach Hopping: Scooter south: Klong Nin (families, calm water) → Relax Bay (hidden cove, rocky but beautiful) → Kantiang Bay (dramatic cliffs, best swimming) → Bamboo Bay (remote, bring water). Each beach has a different character. Allow 4–5 hours.

Evening: Cooking class (฿1,000–1,500 for 3–4 dishes). Several operators in Klong Dao area. Pad thai, green curry, som tam, mango sticky rice. Good fun, and you'll actually use the skills at home.

Estimated: ฿2,500–4,000

Day 4

Old Town + Southern Exploration

Morning: Old Town Koh Lanta (Ban Si Raya). Cultural heart of the island — Chinese-Thai shophouses on stilts over the water, decades-old family restaurants, no chains. Walk the waterfront, browse craft shops, coffee at a converted shophouse.

Afternoon: Mu Ko Lanta National Park at the southern tip (฿200 entry). Short jungle trails, lighthouse viewpoint over the Andaman, rocky beach. Not a full-day activity — 2 hours is enough.

Evening: Kayaking through the mangroves near Old Town (฿800–1,200 guided, or ฿400 independent). Monitor lizards, kingfishers, mudskippers. Best at high tide.

Estimated: ฿1,500–2,500

Day 5

Morning Beach + Depart

Morning: Final swim at your favourite beach. Pack. Breakfast at a beachfront café.

Afternoon: Ferry to your next destination. Heading to Krabi Airport? Book the 10:30am ferry (arrives ~12:00), then minivan to airport (฿350, 90 minutes). Give yourself 3.5 hours minimum between ferry arrival and flight.

Estimated: ฿800–1,500

The 7-Day Deep Dive

Seven days is luxury. Everything in the 5-day plan at a slower pace, plus a PADI course, a Four Islands trip, or two full days of doing absolutely nothing — which, on Koh Lanta, is actually the point.

Days 1–5

Follow the 5-Day Plan

Same structure, slower pace. Move Koh Rok to Day 3, take Day 2 as a pure beach day — no agenda, no bookings, just swim and read. You'll be surprised how much better the rest of the trip feels when you're not rushing.

Day 6

Four Islands or Hin Daeng Diving

Option A — Four Islands Tour (฿1,000–1,500): Koh Ngai, Koh Mook (Emerald Cave), Koh Kradan, Koh Chuek. The Emerald Cave is the highlight — swim through a dark sea cave into a hidden lagoon surrounded by jungle cliffs. Genuinely spectacular. Go first boat to beat crowds.

Option B — Hin Daeng/Hin Muang Diving (฿4,000–5,500): Thailand's best wall diving. Manta rays Nov–Apr, 30m+ visibility, vertical walls dropping to 60m+. Advanced Open Water minimum. Full day (7am–5pm). Seasickness warning: 3 hours open water each way. Take medication before boarding.

Estimated: ฿2,000–5,500

Day 7

Yoga, Massage & Farewell Sunset

Morning: Yoga on the beach (฿300–500 drop-in). Several studios in Klong Dao. Or Thai massage (฿300–500/hour) — Saladan has dozens of places. Ask your accommodation for a recommendation rather than walking in blind.

Afternoon: Last shopping in Saladan (coconut oil, dried mango, local crafts). Pack. Final swim.

Evening: Sunset dinner at Kantiang Bay or Long Beach. West-facing beaches deliver every single evening Nov–Apr. Take a photo. You'll miss this place more than you expect.

Estimated: ฿1,200–2,000

PADI Alternative

Want to do a PADI Open Water course (3–4 days, ฿12,000–15,000)? Replace Days 3, 6, and 7 with course days. Koh Lanta beats Koh Tao for learning: smaller groups, better visibility, calmer conditions. Book directly with a dive shop in Saladan — hotels add 20–30% markup.

The 10-Day Andaman Explorer

Ten days lets you combine Koh Lanta with another Andaman destination. Two routes — both tested, both excellent.

Route A: Koh Lanta + Koh Phi Phi

Best for most travellers. Koh Lanta gives you calm and culture, Phi Phi gives you energy and spectacle.

Days 1–5

Koh Lanta — Follow the 5-Day Plan

Beaches, diving/snorkelling, Old Town, Koh Rok trip. Your relaxation base.

Day 6

Ferry to Koh Phi Phi

Morning ferry Saladan → Phi Phi (90 minutes, ฿400–500). Arrive Tonsai Bay. Phi Phi is the opposite energy — loud, packed, party-focused. If that's not your thing, 2 nights is enough.

Afternoon: Viewpoint hike (30 minutes, sweaty but worth it for the iconic twin-bay photo). Sunset drinks at a rooftop bar.

Days 7–8

Phi Phi Activities

Day 7: Maya Bay day trip (฿400–600 by longtail, or free if you swim from Loh Samah). Time-limited entry — book morning slot. Pileh Lagoon nearby, crystal water, Instagram gold.

Day 8: Shark Point snorkelling (blacktip reef sharks in the shallows — harmless, photogenic). Or diving at Bida Nok/Nai. Or just Long Beach — actually very good.

Days 9–10

Phi Phi → Home

Day 9: Final morning. Afternoon ferry to Krabi (90 min) or Phuket (2 hours). Stay in Ao Nang for convenience if flying out next day.

Day 10: Airport. Done.

Route B: Koh Lanta + Koh Lipe

For adventurers. Koh Lipe is remote, tiny, almost Caribbean. The snorkelling from the beach is genuinely world-class — no boat trip needed.

Days 1–5

Koh Lanta — Follow the 5-Day Plan

Same base. Beaches, culture, diving.

Day 6

Ferry to Koh Lipe

Seasonal ferry Nov–Apr only. 3.5–4 hours, ฿1,200–1,800. Open water — take seasickness medication. Arrive to the bluest water you've ever seen.

Days 7–9

Koh Lipe

Three days is perfect. Sunrise Beach (east) for mornings, Sunset Beach (west) for evenings. Snorkelling off Koh Adang — swim across, free. Walking Street for food (low-key nightlife). Unlike Koh Lanta, the beach snorkelling here is genuinely world-class.

Day 10

Exit via Langkawi or Krabi

Option 1: Speed boat to Langkawi, Malaysia (90 minutes, ฿1,500–2,000). Immigration at Koh Lipe pier. Fly home from Langkawi — brilliant exit strategy.

Option 2: Ferry back to Krabi via Koh Lanta (4+ hours). Only worth it if flying from Krabi.

Seasonal Warning

The Koh Lipe ferry only runs November to April. Outside these months, the only access is Pak Bara pier (minivan from Hat Yai). Visiting May–October? Route A (Phi Phi) is your only option from Koh Lanta. Don't book Route B and assume you'll figure it out.

Where to Base Yourself

Koh Lanta is long and narrow. Where you stay determines what you can access easily. Get this wrong and you'll spend half your holiday on a scooter.

Saladan & Klong Dao (North) — Best for Short Trips

Closest to the pier, most restaurants, dive shops, tour operators. Klong Dao beach is calm and family-friendly. Stay here for 3–5 days when convenience matters. Slightly more developed, less "island feeling" than the south.

Long Beach / Phra Ae (Central-North) — Best All-Rounder

Main backpacker/mid-range strip. 3km of sunset-facing sand, plenty of bars and restaurants. Where most first-timers end up. It works. Budget to luxury all represented.

Klong Nin (Central) — Best for Families

Quieter, shallower water, cheaper. Less nightlife (plus or minus depending on you). Good local restaurants. 15 minutes by scooter to Saladan for ferries and dive shops.

Kantiang Bay (South) — Best for Couples & Solitude

Dramatic cliffs, calm water, boutique resorts. Fewer restaurants, more expensive, but gorgeous. You'll need a scooter — no public transport down here. 25–30 minutes to Saladan. Worth it if peace is the priority.

Pricing (High Season)

Budget: ฿400–800/night (fan room, shared bathroom). Mid-range: ฿1,000–2,500/night (air-con, pool). Boutique: ฿3,000–6,000/night (beachfront villa). Luxury: ฿8,000–15,000/night (Pimalai-level). Book 2–3 months ahead for Dec–Feb — good mid-range places sell out fast.

When to Go

Peak Season (December–February)

Best weather: clear skies, calm seas, 28–32°C. Everything open. Ferries on schedule. Diving visibility at its best. Prices 30–50% higher, popular places book out weeks ahead, Koh Rok trips feel crowded. Book everything in advance.

Shoulder Season (November & March–April)

Our recommendation. November: the island just reopened after monsoon, lush and green, reasonable prices, thin crowds. March–April: hotter (34–36°C) but still dry. Both offer 80% of peak conditions at 60% of the price.

Monsoon (May–October)

Real talk: most things close. Dive shops shut May–August. Ferries reduce to 1–2 daily. West-coast beaches get serious waves and undertow. Rain 2–3 hours daily (afternoon). Accommodation drops 40–50%. Some people love the quiet — the island feels local. But you can't dive, can't island-hop, and some restaurants close entirely. If beaches and sunshine are the priority, avoid.

Getting Around the Island

Scooter (฿250–350/day)

The standard. One main road runs 30km north to south. Easy riding — flat, maintained, light traffic outside Saladan. Petrol stations in Saladan and Klong Nin. Fill up before heading south — nothing past Klong Nin.

Scooter Safety

Wear the helmet. Not for fashion — for insurance. Crash without a helmet and your travel insurance claim gets rejected. Full stop. Take a video walkaround of the bike before you ride — you'll need it when the rental shop claims damage that was already there. Drive on the left. Don't drink and ride — police checkpoints exist, and your insurance company will blood-test you if you end up in hospital.

Songthaew (฿50–100/ride)

Shared pickup trucks on the main road. Wave one down. Saladan to Kantiang and back. Roughly every 30–60 minutes during daytime. Stop after dark. Not ideal for specific timing.

Private Taxi

Through your hotel. Saladan to Kantiang: ฿400–600 one way. Airport transfers from Krabi: ฿2,500–3,500 including minivan + ferry. Useful for airport runs and late nights.
